Chapter 20

“Come on,” Lily said. “Come to dinner.”

“I don’t know. I don’t feel very well.” Celisse turned off her computer. “Maybe I should just go home and lie down.”

“You’ve seemed really stressed,” Bridgette said.

Celisse offered half a smile. “I’m all right.”

Bridgette rested her hands on her hips. “Eat some chicken soup, then go to bed.”

“Okay, Mom.”

Lily giggled.

“Yup,” Bridgette said. “I’m a year older. That makes me the boss.”

Celisse grabbed her coat off the back of her chair and slipped it on. “Paula’s like ten years older. Is that why she’s the boss?”

“I’m not a freaking cop—I can’t solve mysteries.”

The three of them walked out of the office, and Bridgette shut off the lights and locked the door. As they separated in the parking lot, Bridgette shouted her directions of bed rest. Celisse nodded, got in her car, and waited for them to pull out of the lot. Then she headed toward the nearest electronics store. She had decided what she should spend some of Ogden’s money on.

She hadn’t been in one of these electronics superstores in forever. She looked up at the huge signs hanging above the different sections of the store and headed toward the one that said “Computers.” It was ridiculous for her to have to sneak in time on her work computer to look things up when she had thousands of dollars in her bag. She bought one of those computer tablets and paid for a year of internet service. Then she sweet-talked the salesman to help her get it set up and activated.

As she sat in her car in the store’s parking lot, she blasted the heat and did a little more research. She dug through Stafford’s Google search a little more. It seemed as though he didn’t have much of a personal life. She thought she pretty much had him figured—he had gambling debt and was desperate, willing to use her to save himself. But she wasn’t going to go to Ogden. She worried that would just make it all worse. Ogden would either hurt Stafford or walk away from her, not only stop paying her for fighting but stop letting her fight at all, taking away Stafford’s potential hold over her. Then she would lose any hint of protection, and Stafford might pin the murder on her, another big arrest for his résumé. She figured it was best not to poke at the volatile and desperate cop who knew too much about her. She would just keep a distant eye on him.

But she needed to talk to someone, to be busy, today. And sitting in front of a computer screen wasn’t going to cut it.

Donald was out—she was sure she’d gotten all he was going to give her, and she wasn’t interested in talking to him, or in being lectured. She’d had enough of that from her mother to last well into her nineties.

The only other person she could think of was that bail bondsman, Harlan. Certain bail bondsmen knew lots of dirt, and she had the feeling Harlan liked her enough to talk.
